Несмотря на перемонтаж, на который Ренуару пришлось пойти после неудачи на предварительных просмотрах (кроме того, он отснял заново целую треть сцен), фильм в нынешнем своем виде с почти фантастической поэтической силой выражает самые сокровенные намерения режиссера. На примере троицы главных героев, замкнутых внутри себя, в плену у собственного прошлого, Ренуар хотел показать, что в некоторых случаях не ссоры и не различия больше всего отдаляют людей друг от друга, а, наоборот, глубинное сходство их судеб.
